London-based social enterprise NFC Helps Me Limited has received funding from Innovate UK, the UK’s Technology Strategy Board, to expand their offer and lend their industry expertise in assistive technology to those living with dementia.

Their flagship app, How Do I?, was born from their founders’ experience working with young people with learning disabilities at the 6-times Outstanding Swiss Cottage School Development and Research Centre, an internationally renowned centre of educational excellence and expertise in specialist teaching.

This project will focus on exploring areas of strength and difficulty in the day-to-day lives of people with dementia, and look at how mobile technology can provide practical support in daily living.

The How Do I? team will be partnering on the project with Humanly, a person-centred design agency led by award-winning service designer Jenni Parker, and BAM Mobile, creators of innovative mobile experiences for a range of brands including Instagram and Sony.

Innovate UK are responsible for identifying and supporting the technological developments that will drive the UK’s economic growth. Since 2007 they have administered grants totalling £1.8 billion, matched by a similar amount in partner and business funding, and have helped more than 7,600 organisations with projects estimated to add more than £11.5 billion to the UK economy.
